GABRIELINO TRAIL TO STURTEVANT FALLS

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS

Enjoyed a brisk afternoon hike down Big Santa Anita Canyon where I met Sturtevant Falls for the first time. A 50ft waterfall with a charming pool at its base was an awesome little retreat from a tough emotional week. Really looking forward to bringing friends here for a little summertime splashin’ when the weather’s warmer.

  • Distance: 3.25 miles (out and back)

  • Elevation: 0.6 miles steep decline into the canyon which means a steep incline walking back to the trail head

  • Duration: ~1 hour 30 minutes

  • Friendly: Hikers, dogs, bikes

  • Fees & Permits: $5 parking at the Chantry Flats pack station and/or National Forest Adventure Pass

Path starts paved for the first half a mile and then trails into the woodsy canyon and boulder fielded creeks. During the first mile, humble cabins punctuate the trail and make you feel like you’re in The Shire, especially when you pass a private residence called Bombadil’s Castle (like The Hobbit!).

Trail is well marked and quite manicured, so it’s perfect for those new to hiking as you won’t need a map or a compass.
